We're delighted to announce a new workshop, in partnership with the Heritage Skills Centre, Lincoln Castle. 'Caring for Your Church's Artefacts' is designed especially for those helping to care for historic churches, and aims to impart the knowledge and skills they need to look after some of the artefacts or monuments in their own places of worship.

Supported by professional Conservators from WHConservation, and with opportunities to get real hands-on experience, participants will find out how objects in churches can become damaged, what early warning signs to look out for, how to care for and safely clean some of the most common historic materials (stone, glass, wood, metal and textiles), and the role of professional advisors and other specialists. Key audiences might include PCC members, church wardens, clergy or laity, and other interested members of church congregations. No previous experience or knowledge is needed, and by the end of the workshop participants will have gained:

  • an understanding of the benefits of acting to preserve historical artefacts before damage occurs
  • an ability to identify and interpret signs of deterioration, and their causes
  • practical experience in basic conservation housekeeping techniques, and
  • an appreciation of when and where to seek expert advice.

The first 'Caring for Your Church's Artefacts' workshop is made possible with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Tugby Tower Project, and will run at St Thomas Beckett church, Tugby, Leicestershire on Saturday 20 May 2017 from 9:30 to 13:00. The workshop will be repeated between 13:30-17:00 on the same day and costs just £5 per person. More information, including online booking is available on the Heritage Skills Centre website.
