Established in 2013, WHConservation aims to provide professional conservation services to the cultural heritage sector which are both tailored and effective, high-quality and affordable, and which fill a niche in either the basis on which they are provided, or the organisations which they are provided to.

Small-scale, community-led and/or independent heritage attractions in the UK mostly attract funding through a combination of private fundraising and grant applications. In order to be successful in the latter case it has become increasingly necessary for these attractions to hold accredited museum status, which involves meeting and maintaining a range of standards across the spectrum of museum activities, including conservation. Often having little or no in-house conservation expertise, and without funding already in place some attractions are faced with a restrictive ‘catch-22’ situation in terms of achieving conservation standards on a cost-effective footing, particularly given a challenging economic climate. We aim to address this by providing cost-effective, tailored and sustainable solutions to the conservation needs of these institutions: assessing the needs of the museum collection, providing hands-on conservation as appropriate and, importantly, proactively training staff and volunteers in the skills and processes necessary to meet and maintain minimum standards of collections care.

The workforce is the cultural heritage sector’s most significant asset...a significant proportion of the workforce is voluntary and the sector would not be able to survive without their contribution...There are however significant challenges facing the workforce, particularly in a changing economic climate.

(Creative & Cultural Skills, 2008, pp. 17-19)

Furthermore, we aim to address the problem(s) of conservation being a somewhat under-represented and misunderstood discipline in the public imagination by working to bring conservation and the tactile, ‘hands on’ side of history to the community via outreach work, and by bringing affordable conservation solutions to interested private individuals, collectors and non-heritage enterprises.
